How do you define Leadership?

I have read so many definitions of leadership that you can get very confused by exactly what is the crux of this endlessly debated subject.

Here are synopses on leadership which have grabbed my attention and emotion. They come from a small red book issued to Officers Cadets at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. The book is called ‘Serve to Lead’ which in itself sums up a leaders role.

‘Leaders never take counsel of their fears, are loyal to superiors and subordinates, express views clearly and frankly, but when a decision is reached support if fully and stop all criticism. Refrain from jealousy, resentment and self - seeking. Are tactful. Thoughtful and considerate to their colleagues. Develop personal friendship and trust. Never tell anybody to do something that they are not prepared to do themselves. Keep fit. Are absolutely straight in all their dealings.’

‘A man or woman who dares to take a risk, who thinks deeply and clearly, who when accident intervenes is not cast down but changes his plans with a resolute and effective mind, which so far as is possible has foreseen and provided against difficulties’
