The 'buddy buddy' system- Could it work in the Commercial World?

The army has developed, probably over hundreds of years, the ‘buddy buddy’ system. What does this mean? It means that when you go on operations or training you have a mate. That mate ‘keeps an eye’ on you and you him.Your buddy is somebody you can off load your worries and know it stays ‘in confidence’. He checks that you don’t go’ off the rails’, that you maintain your professionalism, tells you if he thinks you have make a mistake, acts a mentor, adviser , drinking partner and loyal friend. To use a better analogy ‘your wife at work’!My buddy in Kosovo was John Nulty. When troubled I would talk to him about personal and professional matters. He would ‘off load’ about decisions the Commanding Officer had made which he didn’t like but nevertheless carried them out.  This ‘pressure release valve’ enabled us to perform at our best because we always knew we had a mate who would provide the support in good and bad times. The key words here are loyalty and confidentiality. The question is can a buddy,buddy system work in the corporate world? Who in the workplace is prepared to be a confident and supporter through ‘thick and thin’? I think the buddy in the corporate world is probably the personal coach but only the top executives can afford such a person.Does loyalty play a role in the corporate world or is pernicious behavior preventing anybody feeling they can trust a work colleague. My own personal experience and observations of the corporate world suggest that this excellent military idea would not find ‘fertile soil’ in the commercial world.I welcome the views from those experienced in the corporate world.Author.
