Is humility important in leadership?

However like all of us, he did have his weaknesses.Every victory increased his ego, vanity and susceptibility to flattery. He likened himself to Achilles and Hercules. His vanity (arrogance) acted as a block to constructive critism and his Macedonian and Greek soldiers became extremely resentful and angry with Alexander’s arrogance attitude which was preventing freedom of speech. Freedom of Speech was the difference between the Greek and Persian Culture therefore hugely valued.Author:
Bill ColeIt reminds me of an incident in an Army Headquaters (HQ) which was carrying out training for operations in the Middle East. This HQ had a unofficial magazine produced by the Majors whereby they could express their opinions anonymously if they wished on any subject in an amusing way. This magazine was avidly read by the three star, two star and one star generals. It was an honest feedback tool which enabled the Commander to ‘feel the pulse’ of his HQ.One of the scenarios in the training was a missile attack on the HQ. One Major commented in this magazine that if such an attack took place he would immediatly rush to stand by a particular General because his ego was so big, the missile would deflect off it at least 10 miles from the HQ. Of course this caused huge amusement because of the truth of the statement.The General in question read this article and went fuming to the Chief of Staff (a two star general) who authorised the publishing of this magazine. He demanded to know the name of the Major and that procedings should be initiated for insubordination. The two star General told him, to take heed of the Majors comments because they were a true relection of his personality.So the message here is modesty and a bit of humility is not a weakeness in a leader. I personaly have seen and worked with some excellent leaders but been irritated by their arrogance. Followers like to see their leaders as human beings, apt to make mistakes and be prepared to admit it. Then the follower will be far more inclined to say ‘this guy is human, he has not let his position go to his head, I will give him all the support I can’.I have met a few top managers and some CEO s in the last two years and found a distinct arrogant streak. Perhaps they feel it is necessary, but I am sure it is affecting staff performance.Therefore, I found it most refreshing to listen to the CEO of BA admitting openly and honestly that he had made a mistake allowing Terminal 5 to open prematurely. His humility was a refreshing change. Maybe that is one reason why he is CEO BA.
